For some of the past year we were on a renewable energy program with Consumer’s Energy but they changed their arrangements and we haven’t quite gotten around to re-enrolling, so I decided to try and offset 50% of our electricity usage (which totalled 3944kwhs in 2005) and 100% of our natural gas usage (907 therms): a total of 16.44 tons of carbon. ...
I’m not really one for resolutions, but the New Year does seem an apt time to clear away a few of those tasks I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. This week saw the launch of the project that’s been occupying more of my time of late than any other. SimplyGiven is a new venture on the part of local firm General Motivational, who specialise in customised products, often for corporate reward schemes, and marks their entry into the consumer market. The site is all developed using PHP5.1 and is my first project to launch using MySQL5. At present it doesn’t make much use of the new features that came with MySQL5, but there’s a good chance that the next revision will. Behind the scenes it’s linked in with a FileMaker Pro database that allows for a sophisticated interface for the staff maintaining the catalogue. The FileMaker database was developed, and the project managed, by Micah Woods of Woods IT. ...
Following our usual pattern of catching big releases on a Sunday night to avoid the hordes of children and teenagers who might otherwise fill the theatre, we saw The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe this past weekend. My expectations had been cautiously optimistic, but just as with the Lord of the Rings movies, this first viewing was almost entirely taken up with cautiously observing discrepancies with the books. That prevented any real assessment of the film in its own right, but I was impressed with the casting and performances of the children, and generally enjoyed it. ...

One of the highlights of our last visit to Nashville (way back in April) was getting the opportunity to hear Will Campbell speak. I hadn’t known much of the man beforehand, but his incredible stories had a deep impact. His outspoken critiques of the Southern Baptist Convention’s hijacking of USian Christianity may also have had a role in endearing him to me… The Nashville Scene recently had a great profile of Campbell that’s well worth a look. Now I really must get round to checking the library for his books. ...

Until late yesterday afternoon there was a problem if you viewed this blog using Firefox and tried to go to an individual entry page. I’d stripped the ugly ‘.html’ from the end of links, but not completed the tweaking of the server settings to make that work as it should. That’s now resolved, and just in time to celebrate the release of Firefox 1.5. While Microsoft fool around trying to make sure turn-of-the-decade technologies finally work in the 2006 release of their web browser, the Firefox developers have once again raised the bar for web browsers. The new version not only provides a smoother browsing experience, it also offers up a number of new features that give the web developers amongst us plentiful opportunities to experiment. ...
After much procrastinating, Kari and I recently invested in iPods. I got one of the new video iPods and, much to her delight, we found a reconditioned pink ipod mini for Kari. And naturally we wanted to be able to listen to them in the car. Having discovered that Griffin’s original iTrip doesn’t work with the 5th generation (video) iPods (despite the “works with all iPods” sticker still on display) we decided to try out the Monster iCarKit, a combined charger and radio hookup which boasts the ability to plug in a mobile phone charger and iPod simultaneously. ...
It has come to my attention (thanks to Kari and Harv) that some people subscribed to the atom feed from this site aren’t seeing updates come up in their newsreaders. When I changed the blog’s templates I also upgraded the atom feed to the (now standard) Atom 1.0 format, the latest and greatest syndication format. Some older newsreaders have trouble with the format so if you somehow ended up here but didn’t see an update in your newsreader you may want to check for an update, and/or request that the writers of your software catch up with the standards. ...
