Like many busy offices, the admissions office at Calvin College had a number of plans for their website but little time to accomplish them all at the same time as working through a burgeoning number of applications and accomplishing the regular admissions routine. I assisted them with a number of projects, from updating existing pages, to consulting on and developing new sections to represent emerging areas of their work.
Working with the Associate Director for Systems and Operations, I met with various parties who had content they would like to be made available online and helped work through different ways of presenting that content and the design of appropriate structures for it. Working within the constraints of the college-wide web template I developed sections of the site with an eye to accessibility and clarity.
The college is currently undergoing a significant shift in their online operations, having made strategic changes to personnel at the start of the 2004/05 academic year. The admissions department currently has a number of ideas that will involve making their site more dynamic and I am helping them investigate how best to integrate those within existing or planned college systems so as to ensure consistency within a complex system.
Recently completed projects include a sophisticated visits calendar that allows staff to quickly update the available visit options and students and parents to register online, the web presence for the Alumni Admissions Support Network and the International Admissions office, including the development of a javascript gallery tool which fades between images for the annual Rangeela event.
